“Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.”
Psalm 116:15
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
John 3:16
Marion Patricia (Patsy) Samuel Shirley was born on May 15, 1943, in Darlington County. She was the daughter of the late Lula Harvin and Laurence Samuel. She was the third of nine children.
Patsy was educated in Darlington County public schools where she graduated from Butler High School in 1963.
She moved to New York after graduation to live with her aunt, Marion Castillio. While there she became reacquainted with and married, a Hartsville native, Clifford Shirley. The union produced three children: Montrese, Derek and Darnell. The family moved back to South Carolina in 1976.
Patsy worked at a family business in New York and for Sara Lee Hosiery in Hartsville, SC where she retired.
She was a lover of music and always had a song in her heart. Even in her final days, she found solace and comfort in music and would be found singing a song that held special meaning to her. As a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, she sang in the Jerusalem Concert Choir, Gospel Choir and in a small group with her sisters.
She was a lover of flowers, and her yard is a testament to that. She could often be found at Lowes shopping in the garden center.
Patsy was preceded in death by: Barbara Green, Bobby Joe Samuel, Alfred Samuel, Gwen, and Asbury Copeland.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her children: Montrese Wingo of Union City, GA, Derek Shirley of Conyers, GA, Darnell Shirley of Hartsville, SC; siblings: Golden (Paul) Liles and Joyce Joy of Hartsville, SC and Albert Copeland of Charlotte, NC; beloved grandchildren: Gabreille Wilson of Charlotte, NC, Shiniquia Shirley of Columbia, SC, Trevante Johnson of SC, Cameron Mitchell of Stone Mountain, GA, Taylor Shirley of Lamar, SC, Derek Shirley, II of Conyers, GA, and Mysia Wingo of Union, GA; bonus children: Zerasia Howard of Decatur, GA, Camden Pourch of Stone Mountain, GA, Sidney Martin, Darion Martin of Charlotte, NC, DeJon Owens, and Tayor Johnson; great-grandchildren: Brayleigh, Prince, Jayce, Sophia, Kington; sisters-in-love: Dorothy Samuel, Barbara Shirley & Josie Shirley; adopted sister, Ruth Segars; and a host of nieces, nephews, and family.
