Mr. Leonard Woods, of Hartsville, entered into rest on Friday, May 5, 2023 at Morrell Nursing Center. 

The family will receive friends at 1000 Edgewood Dr., Hartsville, SC. 

Arrangements will be announced by Davis Funeral Home, LLC.

                                       OBITUARY OF LEONARD WOODS

 

Mr. Leonard Woods was born in Blackshear, Georgia on January 9th,1936. His parents were Floyd and Mattie (Scarborough) Woods.

He was raised in and attended public schools in Waycross, Georgia.

At age 18, he moved to New York City.

At age 20, he met and married 19-year-old Johnnie M. Arthur. They settled in Brooklyn, New York and had two children, Lenny and Genevieve.

Leonard worked full-time in construction and helped build apartment complexes around New York.

On the weekends, Leonard was lead singer for a local band. They performed at various clubs around New York City.

Leonard attended Manhattan Community College and graduated with an Associate Degree in social work.

Leonard left construction and began his career at the U.S. Postal Service. Soon after, he moved his family to Queens, New York. After 42 years of service, Leonard retired from the U.S. Post Office.

He enjoyed martial arts and studied karate and Tai-Chi for 15 years.

After retirement, Leonard moved to Hartsville, South Carolina and joined Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.  

Those preceding Mr. Woods in death are his son Lenny Woods, Columbia, South Carolina; Brothers, Lloyd Woods, Savannah, Georgia, Ham “Genie” Scarborough, San Francisco, California; Sister, Salonia Woods, Liberty, New York.

Left to cherish his memory: his wife Johnnie Woods, Hartsville, South Carolina; his children Genevieve (Harvey) Samuel, Columbia, South Carolina, Cedric Manuel, Arizona and Thanh Tran, New York. His sisters; Wilhelmenia “Tena” (James) Barnes, Savannah Georgia and Lois Ausin (Dan-deceased), Waycross,Georgia. A host of family and friends.
