We regret to inform you of the passing of Mr. Heyward Jackson

Mr. Jackson passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Prisma Health Richland Hospital in Columbia, SC.

Arrangements will be announced by Davis Funeral Home, LLC of Hartsville, SC.

Heyward Jackson, a devoted husband, father, and Air Force Sergeant, passed away surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved son of the late Squire and Girlena Jackson. Born and raised "across the creek" in Hartsville, South Carolina, Heyward was educated in the local public school system, graduating from the historic Butler High School in 1969.

During his time at Butler High School, Heyward was a standout athlete, excelling as both an offensive and defensive lineman on the football team. His exceptional talent on the field earned him high recognition, and he was known for his strength, determination, and sportsmanship.

Early in life, Heyward’s love for music blossomed at the Sixth Street Church of God, where he sang in the youth choir. His distinct baritone voice, a gift that set him apart, was cherished by all who heard it. His favorite hymn, "It’s Me Again, Lord," was a reflection of his deep faith and love for singing. This passion for music continued throughout his life, and after marrying his beloved wife of 50 years, Joretta Jackson, he joined the Hartsville Radio Choir at Household of Faith Holiness Church. His musical legacy lives on through his children and grandchildren, who inherited his gift.

After high school, Heyward began his career at Sonoco Products Company in Hartsville, SC. In 1975, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Air Force. Heyward proudly served as a firefighter, a role in which he safeguarded lives and protected his fellow service members. He was also responsible for tracking airplanes on radar, a duty he performed with precision and dedication. Heyward's service took him on tours in Saudi Arabia and the Philippines, experiences he held close to his heart. He returned home with gifts for his family that are still treasured today.

Following his military service, Heyward continued his career at A.O. Smith in McBee, SC. His love for the open road led him to pursue a passion for driving 18-wheelers, eventually leading him to establish his own business, Jackson 6 Trucking.

Family was at the heart of everything Heyward did. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones and took great pride in the family he was blessed with. To him, there was no greater love than the time spent with family. His love for people extended beyond his immediate family. He was known for his generosity, always ready to feed others, whether it was frying fish or grilling for his church congregation. His kindness and generosity touched many lives.

Heyward also had a deep love for animals and the outdoors. He was particularly gifted in training dogs, with notable mentions including "Hot Shot," "Moon Dog," and "Granddaddy." His skill and patience with animals were widely recognized, and he took great pride in the bond he shared with his dogs.

In addition to his love for animals, Heyward found joy in raising hogs, chickens, and goats, tending to them with the same care and dedication he showed to his family and community. His connection to nature and animals was a source of peace and fulfillment in his life.

Heyward also cherished the time he spent barbecuing with his favorite uncle, “Ninety-Five,” and his old friend, Jim Pooler. These gatherings were a testament to his love for good food, good company, and great memories.

Heyward was blessed with many close friends, including "Grunyen-JoAnn Grant," Malachi Mayshack, Richard Mayshack, Marvin Toney, "The Gilmore Boys," "The Toney Boys," "Pip and Robert Sam," and B-Nutz, to name only a few. Everyone who knew Heyward loved him, and his presence will be deeply missed by all.

He was also known for his dedication to helping others. He spent much of his time visiting the sick and elderly, often driving them to run errands or simply keeping them company. He believed in the value of hard work and staying busy, often saying, "All a man has going for him is to get out and work." His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Heyward was preceded in death by his parents, Squire and Girlena Jackson, his brothers, Rogers and Kim Jackson, and his sister, Margie Marshall. He leaves behind his loving wife, Joretta Jackson; four children: Setoria (Domanick) of Hartsville, SC, Heyward (Shawneca) of Las Vegas, NV, Jenetta (Ventura) of Effingham, SC, and Katrina (Jerry) Fox of Las Vegas, NV. He is also survived by four siblings: Denise Forte of Hartsville, SC, Winifier Jackson of Charlotte, NC, Patricia Poston of Columbia, SC, and Eric (Sabrina) and Milton Jackson, both of Camden, SC. Additionally, he leaves behind two uncles, Malachi (Effie) Mayshack and Charles Mayshack, both of Hartsville, SC; one aunt, Andrea McGill of Darlington, SC; and many nieces, nephews, close relatives, and friends.
