IN REMEMBERANCE OF MR. DAVID L BRUNSON
Mr. David L. Brunson, affectionally known by his family as “Verne”, was a beloved son, father, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend that lit up every room when he walked in! Leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who knew him. His energy was infectious. His smile was huge, self- reassuring, and confident to warm every one’s heart. Verne was very strong. Verne was caring. Verne was kind.
David was born on January 4, 1974, to the late Mary Brunson McIver and Dave Simon in Hartsville, South Carolina. As a young man growing up, David loved playing basketball with his friends in the Trailer Park. His mom kept him and his sisters in the church. They were dedicated members of Shining Light Pentecostal Holiness Church in Darlington SC under the leadership of the late Bishop Jospeh Perry. As he continued his spiritual journey, later in life he became a member of Mended Heart Ministries in Darlington, South Carolina.
David was educated in the Darlington County Public School System, graduating proudly with the class of 1993 from Hartsville High School. During his school years, he worked devotedly at Sonic Drive-In to provide for and help support his sisters. After high school, David continued his studies and his intelligence shone brightly as he earned a Welding Certificate from Florence-Darlington Technical College. He began working at Talley Metals Technology in McBee, South Carolina.
He was a man of many talents; dedicated and consistent. However, he chose a different path and ventured into the world of Truck Driving school with Prime Time. In 1994 he received his CDL. David embarked on a fulfilling career, securing a position with Land Air Transport, INC, showing unwavering commitment and reliability throughout his tenure. After driving for many companies, he ended his driving career with Dawkins Concrete when his health began to decline suddenly.
Beyond his professional life, David was a man of many hats. He possessed an innate love for people and was always willing to extend a helping hand to anyone in need. Other than his love for driving trucks, his lifelong passion and interest was being a Mason. He was an active member of Myrtle Lodge #64, PHA. David is a 32° Master Mason in Myrtle Lodge #64, PHA (Ashland Consistory #246). He loved everything about being a part of this Lodge. We must not forget his love for his social Club Phantom Soldiers. He wore that vest with pride. His outgoing and sociable nature made him the life of family gatherings, and his love knew no bounds. He was a beacon of love and support for his relatives, and his absence will be deeply felt.
Above all, David’s heart belonged to his children and there was nothing more he valued than spending quality time with them. His unending desire was determined to provide the best possible life for David Brunson Jr., his oldest child and only son. Born August 18, 1993, He was one proud father. As life evolved, David was blessed with three daughters who he loved very much.
He loved family cookouts and other gatherings, if you knew him, then you knew David loved keeping a smile on everyone’s face. He had a passion for cooking and grilling. He took pride in his cooking, and we will remember his outstanding cooking abilities. Chicken bog, one of his best dishes, will be missed with the unwavering love that can never be duplicated.
David was a protector, and he was very protective over the women in his family. There was nothing he loved more than spending time with family, friends, and social groups. When he wasn’t devoting time and energy to his family, you could find David enjoying a game during his downtime to whom he was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steeler’s Fan.
David’s health began to decline suddenly in 2018 and it attacked him aggressively. Despite tough medical treatments and lengthy hospital stays, he remained positive and kept pushing. All he wanted to do was eat a good meal with his family and Thanksgiving 2023, he got his wish. Brother David L. Brunson heard the call and laid down his working tools on November 23, 2023, as he took the Masters Hand and went on home.
David is preceded in death by both of his parents; his sister LaTrice Guy White; maternal and paternal grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
He leaves behind a cherished legacy of love survived by his four amazing children, David Brunson Jr, of Charleston, SC, LaDyshia Brunson of Society Hill, SC, DaShawna and Abriana Brunson of Hartsville, SC; two granddaughters, Riyah Waiters and DeAsia Brunson; three sisters, Stephanie (Allen) McDonald and LaTonya Lucas both of Hartsville, SC, Mary Brunson of Darlington, SC; five brothers, Tonal (Lucy) McLeod of Sanford, NC, Dave Simon Jr of Florida, Corey and Eric Simon both of Hartsville, SC and David Hawkins of Hartsville, SC; one uncle, Ronnie Brunson of Darlington, SC; one aunt, Lori James of Florida; one brother-in-law, Terry Lucas; special caregiver and sister Latoya Martin of Hartsville, SC; two special cousins, Lanie (Ernest) McPhail and Joseph Brunson Sr of Hartsville, SC; two special nephews that he treated as his own, Terriyon and Tah’Jzehr Lucas; godmother, Sylvia (Stevie) Sellers of Darlington, SC; special friends, Tonya Blanton of Cheraw, Thaddeus Dolford of Darlington, SC, Jermaine McCoy of Lamar, SC, and Carlissa Brunson of Hartsville, SC; Myrtle Lodge #64, PHA and Phantom Soldiers; a host of many other relatives and a multitude of friends.
